We have a hole in our back yard. We have always had a hole in our back yard. We also have boys and dogs. They go together don't you know. When there are no longer boys and dogs in this house there will no longer be a hole in the back yard.
What is the hole for all you ladies may ask. I'll tell you, I don't know it just makes them happy to have a hole. Years ago I used to fill it in and they would dig it out. We played that game several times until my husband convinced me that a hole was a necessary ingredient to the raising of boys and dogs. So I gave up and just let it be.
Must be true. There is Layn his first summer out here on his own and he gravitates to that hole like iron to a magnet, same as he does when it has rained and there are mud puddles out there. (but that is another post)
Today I am thanking God that there is a hole in my back yard. Here I sit at the picnic table working on an essay for school and Layn and Archie have been happily occupied in that hole for a good 15 minutes. (that has to be a record!)

Wonderful pics.Truly.
You married a wise man Ann!
My girl would have been all over the hole in your backyard when she was little. I always had little rocks rattling around in my washer and dryer. She loved to fill her pockets with interesting rocks. When she started school, the playgrounds were pea gravel paradises for her. She'd happily spend all of recess combing through the gravel looking for fossils. Your photos of Layn brought back a wave of memories. Thank you!
Wil once said to me when we lived in a suburb with lots of kids from age about 20 to 2, "why don't these kids ever play at anyone else's house? I'd like to have some grass in our yard." I told him that when the kids grew up he could have grass and park his car in the garage. That particular summer we had a "play house" in our garage all summer long. Now we have no kids on the grass and still no grass! However, we are trying to work on that but without any help from natural rain it may not work too well. Sprinklers just can't seem to keep up.
@saintvi - @TheSunnyC - @Bricker59 - I am revelling in holes, stones, and boys who like to dig. The rocks in my washer and the sand in the lint filter just make me grin. Somehow all the angst that I used to have over dirt in the house is gone. Bring it on Layn! There is more to life than vacuum cleaners and dust rags.
Oh gosh! I am sooo glad I bactracked to this!!! Dirt and boys are indeed attracted to each other!
