The Simple Womans Daybook 13 September 2010
Outside my window....it is soggy and chilly and the weather has a definite fall quality to it. It rained all day yesterday and is supposed to rain all day today. I don't mind though. There is something about this time of year the resets the mind so that you expect to spend the day inside and watch the rain come down. You almost require days like today so that you can wrap up in a cozy handmade quilt and read with a nice fragrant cup of tea at the ready. It's just that time of the year.
I am thinking....of clouds and wind and falling raindrops. I am thinking of the color of the sky and how my grandmother would have said it is a "lowering sky" I think that was an Irish term and I never got around to asking her what it meant. I always thought she would live forever, the way that little girls do about their grandmothers. She was just always there and then one day she wasn't and I never got to ask her what that meant.
I am thankful for....the lessons that I have learned from the people that I have lost. My grandmother taught me to read and to learn each and every day of my life. Never stop enquiring and learning right up until the end. My papa Vito taught how to laugh. Great big rolling belly laughs. He showed everyone who came into contact with him to keep a twinkle in your eye and a lightness in your step and laugh when you wanted to. My papa Buehner taught me to laugh too but more importantly he taught me that the fourth commandment was inviable. No matter what I felt or what I wanted to say to follow the fourth commandment because it carries with it a promise. My grandma Teepell taught me peace. Everything about her spoke of peace and contentment and love.
From the schoolroom....life will go on. We will march forward in the awesome pursuit of education.
From the kitchen...I have options. I have every intention of exercising my options today only I think I will do it later.
I am wearing.....tinkerbell pj pants and a landshark tee shirt. What a great combo.
I am creating....today that is a good question. I have a couple of comissions that I must begin so I guess I can claim those as creations.
I am going...to take Doug to work and then nowhere else today.
I am reading....The Shadows by Nicholas Carr A very excellent read.
I am hoping....to get my research paper done early this week so I don't drive myself crazy on the weekend.
I am hearing...the clock ticking, Doug making his lunch for work, someone closing the door into the washroom, and Isabella whining to get into her crate.
Around the house....the usual chaos of morning preparations. MK is out doing barn chores. Matthew is coming in from having done his. Doug is getting ready to go to work. Ian is gone already. Melissa and Layn are upstairs still slumbering.
One of my favorite things...routine and order. Not a slave to it but enough to know what to expect.
A few plans for the rest of the week...this is the second to last week of the semester for me so I have a couple of papers to complete. School and family will occupy most of my time and that is fine with me.
Here is a picture thought that I am sharing with you...
This is what time of year it is around here. That is a lowering sky. Bonfires and hoodies and nice warm, fragrant cups of tea are in order for this time of the year.

Love this post.I love hearing about your life.
But I'm sorry...tea around a BONFIRE? Beer.
@Bricker59 - I try to appeal to the more elegant in my reading community. For me it it a nice Killeans or a full bodied Fosters on these cold nights. Even a couple of shots of JD helps chase away the chill better than tea.
wish that we had a lowering sky..
low·er·ing (lo̵u′ər iŋ)
adjective

scowling; frowning darkly
dark, as if about to rain or snow; overcast: a lowering sky
still trying to convince my hubby that moving to NY would be a good thing
@ugotafriend - You must be most charming and ever so convincing. I guess to him my presence in NY isn't a selling point.
He doesn't know you like I know you (to him you are just a blog buddy -- to me you are a sister from another mother)
He hears NY and thinks -- cold, snow, more work around the house (shoveling snow and all that), no employment opportunities, teens trapped in the house on really cold days (my kids are rather snarky when trapped indoors for too long), cold and then heat and humidity and allergies. So it is going to take a lot of prayer in addition to charm and gluten free cookies......
@ugotafriend - To New Yorkers really cold days to not mean trapped inside the house. New Yorkers are hearty folks who can take anything. Kids are for shoveling snow and heat and humidity are for offering up. Better start baking, big time.
but you need to remember that he is California bred and born (as are our children). If it gets below 70, they wear jackets and complain about the cold and if it gets above 80 or above 25% humidity, then they wear shorts and complain about the heat....
@ugotafriend - Definitely no toughness there. They NEED New York!!!
Your fall comes earlier than ours.
@TheSunnyC - Actually it isn't officially fall yet but it is getting cooler and the trees are changing. However around the middle of October we will get a bit of Indian Summer and have temps in the 80's and have frosts in the morning. Those are the weeks that I love the most. The smells are so bright and crisp that it is irresistable.
