  • Pity party or celebration, you choose.

Today I took my math mid-term.  I won’t tell you all the grade since some of you actually think I’m smart and I don’t want to spoil the illusion.  But my grade wasn’t so great.  Then I finished my final paper for one of my courses.  I think it was pretty good for someone who hasn’t been to school in a lot of years and who hasn’t had a teacher grading her writing for that long either.  Time will tell about that.  I turned it in to Turnitin.com to make sure that I didn’t plagiarize and got a 17% approval rating, well within the acceptable range.  As if I didn’t know that it was free from plagiarism, but well you have to do what you have to do.

So part of me wants to celebrate that the paper is done and I am three credits closer to my degree and the other part wants to feel sorry for myself that I didn’t do better on my math.  But I know that I am no mathametician. (I can’t even spell it)  To quote Old Hat, “Algebra I was the worst three years of my life.”  I’m with you Hat, and here I am doing it again.

Think I’ll pop the top on a Guinness Extra Stout and drown my math sorrows and celebrate my writing abilities all at the same time.  Cheers!!!!!

  • My math skills are woeful, too, if that’s any comfort. Feel free to drop by for cheesecake and baby therapy. Herself is in a cooing, smiling, very alert mood today, which makes her excellent company!

  • @La_Chose_En_Soi - I like to think that those who are exceptionally literate don’t really need to be well versed in math skills.  Those who are good at math are generally those who do not communicate well.  My husband takes offense at this analysis.  How I wish I were closer to you, I surely could have used your not inconsiderable help on my paper.  But I managed to muddle through on my own.

  • But it is done. Enjoy the beer. Wish we were closer to tutor and celebrate and commiserate as well. (and some people can do both tolerably well)

  • Very few people are good at both math and english-literature-communication-whatever you want to call it.  I got a D in algebra only because the teacher took pity on me.  You have my sympathy and my congratulations.

  • I can do literature/English…..Wil is a math whiz but we neither one do well in the others category.  I think you are very brave and doing well.

  • I was decent at Algebra and Geometry, and excelled at Statistics, as those seem to “make sense” to me. I did, however, fail Calculus I 3x, but passed on the 4rth attempt. I still maintain the Calculus is a made-up math. You can’t just add in a letter when you don’t know the answer, people! *backs away from the temptation to rant* ~ L

  • @empress8411 - Math is ok when it only involves numbers and it is doing something real.  But when you involve the alphabet and are doing something that has no practical application then you’ve lost me.
