  • That’s love!!!!!

It’s black raspberry season around here, as opposed to blackberry season which is in August.  So I have been scouring the woods and fields for berries.  My husband like berries of any kind but he particularly like black raspberries.

You really have to love someone to wade through weeds that are taller than you are, I kid you not, to get to thorny canes that rip at your hair and clothing only to find meager amounts of berries.  It has taken me three pickings to come up with three quarts of berries.  One more quart and I can make him a batch of jam.

Black berry picking also tends to turn one into a bit of a selfish beast.  Whenever I am out there and I see a bird swoop down a swipe a particularly fat one off a bush I feel like it has stolen from me.  It’s going to take a long time before I forget all this angst and I let my husband eat any of that jam.

I love you Doug, really I do.

  • Beautiful.  I made some jam with low sugar for my hubby, ‘cuz he’s type 2 diabetic.
Black raspberries sell for $3. a pint at our farmer’s market.  If I were selling them they’d be more than that!

  • “AMEN”  I’m just torn up dealing with blackberries.  Ours are always on my July 4th.  Need to get out there and pick again today.  I am going to cut everything back this year and see what happens next year.  The briars are killing me!

  • Love bush berries — raspberries, blackberries, blueberries.  Many fond memories of picking berries on vacations with my fam growing up.

  • So THAT’S why blackberries are so expensive at the farmer’s market!

Great example of real life romance

  • I have never heard of black raspberries! Do they taste the same as red?

  • @whteroses - Not as sweet I guess.  I don’t care for them so I had to ask my husband. The real blackberries that come in August are very tart and require a lot more sugar than these do.

  • How sweet of you and they look so yummy!

  • Now our blackberries are very sweet…wonder what the difference is (of course, we eat them so fast that it is unlikely that I’d ever make jam).

  • When John picked us up from the airport, there were a few cars on the side of the highway and their passengers were making quick work of the hillsides lining the highway, all of which were covered in berry bushes.  I can only imagine that they taste like exhaust.  John brings me ones that he finds when he and the guys go for their walks at work.  They’re awesome!
