Sweet Silence
Monday morning I woke up with a sore throat and a cough. No big deal. I have seasonal allergies and we heat with wood, both good explanations for that condition. But by yesterday afternoon, not only did I have a VERY sore throat but I could not stop coughing and I had difficulty breathing. I was still not alarmed since most of the kids in my Tuesday class had runny noses and coughs so it was bound to happen to me sooner or later.
Then after coughing my way through the night last night and having to use the nebulizer every three hours so that I could breathe, I decided a visit to Dr. Jim was in order. Oh, and did I mention that my voice has been gone since late Tuesday. I don’t mean just scratchy but gone, totally gone.
This situation seems to be a matter of amusement to everyone that I have met for the past two days. From the teller at the bank, to the town clerk when I went to pay the taxes, even the ladies at the cafe that we frequent in the town near ours when Matthew and I went out for lunch today. (I had a desire for soup thinking that it would soothe my bedeviled throat) I don’t know why someone losing their voice is a matter for laughter but it does seem to be in this small town.
Anyhow, I saw Dr. Jim and the diagnosis is an infection in my throat and vocal chords. So until further notice, when the drugs are all gone, I am to remain silent. Is this a difficulty? No way. As a matter of fact, as the lone woman in a house full of males, it is working out to be something nice. They all have to quiet down and listen so that if I do speak they can be sure to hear what it is that I have to say. My husband especially has to attend because he is hard of hearing and I cannot speak loud enough to be heard over all of the usual noise that goes with this busy household.
So, contrary to the comments that have been made today, they won’t be relieved to have me be silent, rather, I will be relieved to have a little silence for the time being.

I do think it’s kind of funny to see someone try to speak and then nothing comes forth. My biggest source of frustration is that I know sign language (my foster brother is deaf) and when I can’t speak, I want to use my signs Gr-r-r-r-r! In your case, I’d probably resort to writing to save my voice until it heals. Hope it gets better soon!
@IMChurchmouse - Actually I am enjoying being silent and letting them wait on me and guess what it is that I want. I like the silence.
OUCH! Sore throats are one of my LEAST favorite illnesses. I’d had to think of having an infection even in my vocal cords. I pray you a speedy recovery.
Mine has been scratchy for a few days but so far that is as far as it has gone. I hope it doesn’t get worse. We have been so blessed this winter not to get any of the cruddy things that are going around.
@HumbleWalk - @TheSunnyC - Let me say that I hope that no one gets this. It is not only painful but the whole world seems to be getting their jollies out of my distress. (okay, not the whole world, just my little corner of it.) There is one perk, it is a great appetite suppresser. I haven’t eaten more than a whole meal since Monday afternoon, everything hurts going down. That’s looking on the bright side.
OOOh so sorry to hear that you are in pain. Last time my voice went, people would try to get me to talk so they could laugh at my squeaks and squawks. Enjoy the men taking care of you…..I’m praying.
I’m so sorry to hear this! I hope you’re feeling better soon. I send mental hugs!
Wow, sounds challenging! We had a friend who had surgery on his vocal chords, and he couldn’t speak aloud for weeks. I always wondered how in the world he did it!
@homefire - You manage. I suppose this will get old after awhile. Hopefully it will be gone before that happens. Fortunately my husband and sons are very patient with me, so far.
I will say a pray for your throat. I used to loses my voice every summer. It has to do with my work, and the humidy in the air here in the summer. I hope you feel better soon.

That’s great! Loved the story~
Ah, the beauty of the written word! I would rather have laryngitis than carpal tunnel any day.
