The Simple Womans Daybook Monday 16 March 2009
Outside my window…………it’s dark still. Probably cold since there is bits of cold sneaking in around the corners of the room and curling around my ankles. The weatherman was calling for a sunny day in the 60′s today, I hope he is right. This winter weary person could use a day like that.
I am thinking…………what a comfort it is to have MK home for the week and sleeping just across the hall. The house feels happier and more content with one more home.
From the schoolroom……….all is quiet and in readiness for the day to start. Even though MK is on break Matthew must persevere so that we don’t have to go all summer long.
I am thankful for…………..my children. For the help that Matthew and Ian were on Saturday while I was building my new coldframe. For all the cleaning up that MK and Ian did around here. It is really beginning to look better out there.
From the kitchen…………chicken and dumplings tonight.
I am wearing……….long johns, blue nightshirt (I haven’t even thought about getting ready for the day)
I am reading………….Still working on the Valiant Woman
I am hoping…………that this week goes very slowly so that we have plenty of time with MK before she has to go back to school.
I am creating………..the finishing touches on the talk that I have to give on Wed. night. Wish me luck everyone, I am not a public speaker.
I am hearing…………just the sound of my fingers tapping on the keys, otherwise the rest of the house is early morning quiet.
Around the house…………there is a mountain of laundry from this weekend, there is a pile of sewing that needs to be done. Some papers from last week that need correcting and the next year’s batch of books needs to be gotten out.
One of my favorite things………..planning my vegetable garden for the coming summer.
A few plans for the rest of the week…………the usual round of classes and holy hour along with packing in lots of special time with MK. My talk on Wed. and some time spent with some friends for St. Patricks and St. Josephs day. My final follow-up appointment on my surgery on Thursday.
Here is a picture thought that I am sharing with you………
The coldframe that I built on Saturday. Matthew and Ian cut the lumber and I put it together. (I don’t do power tools) There is another one in the making. I hope to get some spinach and other greens going this week so that we can have some fresh vegetables from the garden a little earlier than usual. I also have plans for a three bin compost system that I am going to start building this week. I ordered 2000 red worms and they are going to need a home when they get here.

I remember the worms. They all ran away last time. That’s bad when even the worms run away!
@P_Obrien - Not funny. I’m very sensitive right now. If the worms run away this time than I am giving up, on everything.
I was going to comment on ordering worms, but then read your reply below. Sounds like something serious is going on — something more than just gardening. I’m not sure the story here, but I’m sorry things are on edge for you.
@ideaguy - Too many hormones running around this place, that is all. One woman, too many guys. They asked for it. But I do hope that the worms stay around this time because I do like my garden and with the children about all flown it would be good to get it the way I like for a change.
Ah, that’s a relief! It would be pretty bad if one’s whole view on life hinged on the behavior of worms!
You did a good job on that construction project! You obviously have the knack for putting things together, be it fabric or lumber.
I’m glad you have your daughter home for a while to help balance out the universe.
@nettieheidmann - Too many men in my world right now. Actually the sun covers up all the flaws in my cold frame but it will serve the purpose and that is all that matters. In the cold north we need something to hurry up the growing season and I think this will serve just fine.
Making a home for the homeless worms — what a woman.
If you speak even half as well as you write, you will shine.
After a day filled with too many girl hormones, I long for some balance so I can see where you are coming from.
You are blessed
and if the worms run away, you are welcome to come to sunny CA and help me with my blackberry bushes (you are welcome anyway but the worms would give you a good excuse)
@ugotafriend - Are your blackberries in bloom? the next thing for me to do is to make some order of mine before they start to green up. Last summer circumstances caused me to neglect them and they became a jungle and tangle of vines. But we got four pies from them and enough for MK and I to eat to our hearts delight while we were working in the asparagus next to them. Pretty good for a patch that we only planted the year before.
@perelandra30 - we planted ours last spring and got 2 berries from them. They haven’t bloomed yet but they are all over the planter so I am getting Josiah to build a support system to keep them up and off the ground. So far only the peach tree has bloomed and now we have little peaches. Our weather has been a bit bi-polar so I am not sure if the plants know if they are to bloom or not.
