  • Two Pleasant Surprises

Two things happened to make this day a very pleasant one.  The first being that Doug’s boss called and said don’t come to work until 1:00.  It is very cold out today and I think that he wanted to spend the day inside with his family.  Doug has had a bad cold and it is a good opportunity for him to stay inside and stay warm and maybe get better a little faster.  He doesn’t know how to rest so that is out of the question.  So far he has fixed my vacuum cleaner, swept the whole downstairs, filled the wood box to overflowing,  and done some work on the computer.  He still has plans to fix the shower massage in the downstairs bathroom and the shower in the upstairs bathroom.

While I was taking my shower there was a commotion in the kitchen.  When asked what was going on my husband declared that there was an owl in the closet in the garage.  We have a closet out there where we store pots and pans and canning supplies.  Very frequently birds get in through a hole in the ceiling.  This morning they discovered this little owl sittling on one of my pans.  The poor little guy was frightened and flying at the window trying to get out.  After getting his picture taken several times they finally opened the overhead door and the closet door then Matthew captured him in a gallon milk pitcher and let him go free outside.

How beautiful he is to look at.  For awhile after he was set free he sat in the tree by the back of the house.  It’s funny when you know that this wildlife is all around you but what a surprise when you get to encounter it up close like this.

  • Is that a Screech Owl?  Think it is about the right size.

  • @TheSunnyC - I haven’t taken the time to look him up yet.  He’s cute though.  What a treat to see him sitting there in the closet.

  • What a surprise!  Owls in the Closet: sounds like a book Farley Mowatt or Jean Craighead George might write.  And I’m impressed by your husband’s energy and skill at house projects.  When he’s not feeling well!

  • I love it! He’s adorable! We have a Great Horned Owl that lives around here and I love to hear him at night. Sometimes we see him sitting on top of our barn and he looks huge.
I agree that your little guy there is a Screech Owl too…
I also love your snow pictures…we only received a dusting.
I hope that you’re doing well with your recovery…whenever I think of you, I say a prayer.
I also loved the picture of the dress….makes me wish I had a talent for sewing!
    Have a blessed weekend….

  • @ideaguy - His industry is one of the things that I love the most about him.  He works 14 hour days on another farm, then he comes home and looks for things that need repair around here.  When we had trouble with the electricity he came home every night and worked until past bedtime trying to find the problem and fixing it little by little until it was right.  He does his best to make sure that I have everything that I need to function around here when he is gone.  The only way that I know he is unwell is by the cough and the sniffles, he would never tell me that he is sick.  The man is an example to all who come in contact with him.

  • @brbschrm - We have so much snow that MK is thrilled.  She is our winter lover.  She is also happy  because it keeps me down more than pleasant weather would.  I am totally afraid of falling under the best of circumstances but now with the surgery I am absolutely terrified of falling.  Thank you for your prayers you cannot know how I feel them and know that they are what are helping me so much with my healing.  My only pain is the recovery of the damaged nerves and the arthritis in my hips which has been there for years.  Wish you lived closer I would give you sewing lessons.  I love nothing better than to pass on the ability to sew.  We’ll see how my version of that dress turns out.

  • Sounds like a great guy!

  • When I was in college, there was a big owl that would sit on the telephone pole in my parents’ backyard.  It would cause our dacshund to crouch under the door frame of our glass door.  Hilarious!

What a beautiful bird he is!
