How I spent the rest of the day
Yesterday Matthew picked up a bunch of apples and ran them through the press. This morning I set to canning the cider that he had made. Twenty-one quarts is a pretty good amount.
I also made a batch of applesauce and canned some of that. Matthew was rather affronted by that. It is my way of insuring that some of the sauce makes it to the end of the week.
Then I peeled some peaches and made a couple of my very delicious Bourbon Peach Cobbler. Boy does that make you think of fall when the house is filled with the smell of baking peaches.

that looks wonderful! YUM!! My grandmother used to can this time of year, too…and my Mom did a bit, too…seeing canned good (REAL canned goods) makes me think of home. What fun!
thanks for the birthday wishes, too…it’s been a great day so far!
Your days make me want to come visit your family farm (or at least a farm) and help out! It sounds like so much fun…hard work, but fun.
YUM!
@whteroses - you are right, hard work but fun. the fun part is that we are all together and laughing and talking. that makes the hard work easier and go faster. you are welcome here any time that you are in central new york.
Oh my goodness!!! AWESOME!!!
Don’t you just love canning stuff? I didn’t have much to can this year, as our garden did unusually poorly! But just a week ago I canned some grape juice from the grapes from our own grapevines. It smelled so good in here!
Thanks for your comment!
@WinkAtTheCabDriver - there is a love/hate thing with me and canning. I am a very lazy person so when it comes to canning and the work involved I actually hate to do it. (hate is not too strong a word here either) But when I am all done and the kitchen is cleaned up and I view the jars all lined up on the table then the love comes and I am very proud of all the work that I just accomplished. I get this warm feeling from knowing that my family will eat well in the cold months to come. My husband says that I get an extremely large amount of good feelings from a full pantry and full freezer. I think it is the nesting instinct inherant in the female.
